The research department covers a wide variety of technical challenges: Ranging from the development of new insulating materials up to condition assessment of insulating systems by means of different diagnostic methods. In the field of insulation systems, enhancements of syntactic foam as an insulating material with low specific density are in the main focus. Especially the material behavior and aging process under different environmental conditions are investigated as well as new fields of application like the electrical insulation of superconductors. A new topic is the assessment of material aging of insulation materials under mixed field stresses, as may occur at hybrid ac/dc overhead lines. In the field of diagnosis, the assessment of polymeric insulation systems by using ultrasound is in focus. Besides the detection of small impurities in different materials like elastomers (e.g. cable joints), boundary layers between two different materials are detectable.
A new application of ultra sound diagnosis is the temperature measurement at inner interfaces. For the characterisation of relevant electro-technical material parameters as well as for complex research tasks in the field of insulation systems and diagnosis the department offers with its laboratories a broad range of experimental knowhow completed by scientific analysis and modelling.
