The telecommunication industry is facing one of the biggest upheavals in its history. The new communication technologies are the greatest opportunity but also the biggest threat for telecommunication providers. These technologies force providers to change not only their networks but also their business models and product portfolios.
Voice telephone and SMS were for a long time the most important telecommunication products and a reliable source of revenue. However, the emerging Internet services like Skype, Twitter, Google Voice and Apple iMessage are jeopardizing this source of revenue. They offer similar functionality to customers, e.g. voice telephony or messaging, but use less costly infrastructure and hence can be provided at lower prices or even free. Thus, telecommunication providers have to compete nowadays not only against each other but also against Internet-based companies.
