The objectives of the thesis are to assess the effect of these factors including fault dips, shear strength characteristics, different locations and various in-situ stress states, to discuss the behaviour of stress distribution around the cavern and along the fault, to investigate the effect of the fault presence on the support structures and to promote the understanding of the mechanism of such effects. Numerical studies on this problem were carried out by using the existing distinct element method, UDEC2D and finite difference method, FLAC2D. The effect of fault factors on the cavern stability was evaluated through the investigation of the area of plastic zone and cavern deflection, which are respectively defined as the potential failure rock mass around the cavern and maximum induced displacement on cavern boundary. Some subroutines were developed for the purpose to facilitate the interpretation of these numerically calculated results.
